Bad Trees 7

June 1, 2016 5:12 pm

Removal of a lightning strike redwood in a suburban neighborhood. Do not copy these techniques without a full understanding of when, why, and how to deliberately execute them. This video is meant to highlight this project for my library of work and to show the value of the “Stein Arbor Trolley,” engineered by, Reg Coates.
The details of the job are not elaborated enough in this short video to warrant viewing it as “instructional.”

Ropetek Helmet Pairing Ritual

May 19, 2016 8:10 am

Here is a typical scene on our jobsites when getting started.
If the same crew everyday then routine is simplified but we vary a lot on manpower from job to job which makes for a lot of resetting and starting over. Before Adam came on board, It was just luck when we linked up by randomly stabbing away at button sequences like chimpanzees playing with a microwave.

I edited this version of the video a bit to atone for a rather dodgy looking escape route seen by viewers in the first video. It was a calculated and deliberate maneuver but pushing the envelope enough to make me retract it on the advice of wise counsel for appearance sake to the impressionable youth that I highly value in our industry.

Bad Trees Episode #2 – Pine Snag

April 21, 2015 3:30 PM

Dead pine tree. Solid at base, pretty decent up top too but with a bad bread-stick like area about 1/2 way up that I climbed above. Tree was ok for the vertical pressure of standing on and moving slow but not for the side pressure involved in speed-lining/rigging or jostling around.

Hazards below were septic tanks/lines, irrigation, lawn and shrubs. Debris was to be left over the bank on the backside of the tree. Septic line was on the backside of the tree as well so we positioned rounds right at the base of the back side so that I could hit them and bounce the rounds over the septic line and over the bank. Not very often that we want violent bouncing in tree-work but it’s fun when needed.

Also, still climbing on the ZigZag, which I must love, because I don’t seem to use the Blake anymore. I’m results oriented. I don’t find myself using things that I don’t like. I am surprised more than anyone that I’ve been lured away from the split-tail Blake climbing system. What’s the world coming to?
